Prison Dog
In most animal shelters, many dogs wait far too long for a new owner. Dogs who are left on their own. Sometimes they are in the shelter because they were badly taken care of by their owner, because of which they developed negative behaviour. They may also have ended up in the shelter due to neglect and loneliness. With the Prison Dog project we want to help these dogs to a new start!
The aim of the project is to rehabilitate shelter dogs into family dogs or special aid dogs, so they can find a new, loving owner. At the same time we want to offer the trainers of these dogs, the prisoners, a useful and positive experience.
While training the dogs, the inmates also work on their social skills, such as working in a team and feeling empathy. Under the guidance of a professional dog trainer, the dogs will be transformed into family dogs or special aid dogs in eight weeks. After the training they are ready for adoption by a loving owner. This way we can train more shelter dogs who can look forward towards a better life with a new owner
The Dutch Department of Corrections is expected to start a first pilot project in a Dutch Prison in 2010. Prison Dog is derived from similar projects in The United States.
