Pet Carers
With the pilot-project 'Pet Carers' we want to examine if we can help people who can’t take care of their pet temporarily due to sickness or old age. As a result, many people are forced to bring their pet to an animal shelter which can cause unnecessary stress and suffering for the owner as well as the pet. If the pilot turns out successfully, we will implement the project nationwide.
Let's look at an example where a pet owner has to be hospitalised for a certain period of time. He has no neighbours, friends or family members that can take care of the pet. Chances are that the owner is forced to take his pet to an animal shelter because there's no other solution. When the owner returns home, he realizes his or her pet isn’t there any more. The impact can be stressful and could have a negative effect on the healing process. As proven in many studies, pets can have a positive influence in times of sickness and recovery.
With this project we want to offer a solution by:
- Establishing a network of foster homes where the animals can stay until their owners have recovered and are able to take care of the pets again
- Linking the pet owners to the foster homes
- Checking the quality of the care provided by the foster homes

The program focuses on the following people:
- Elderly people
- Families with sick children
- Patients
- Palliative patients
