Animal Life Foundation thinks it is important that people understand why keeping an exotic animal is not very sensible and sometimes even dangerous for the animal itself, as well as for public health and Dutch fauna. Unfortunately, illegal trade flourishes in the Netherlands, especially through the internet. Animal Life Foundation actively works to create more awareness in consumers and to enlarge alertness with internet providers. They can play an important role in forcing back this kind of trade.
Animal companions are essential in the daily lives of many human beings. For elderly pets are often of enormous importance. They give joy in their life, keep them out of isolation and even provide a better health. But for many elderly keeping a pet is not possible. Most retirement homes do not allow animals.
Het Kralingse bos, located in Rotterdam, is a well known forest and recreational area of approximately 200 acres. It consists of a large lake - the Kralingse Plas - and surrounding green forest. In 2007 it was named the best public area in the Netherlands and won the Municipal Valuation Interior. This recreational area attracts over three million visitors annually. But the area is not only attractive for humans. It also acts as an important place of residence to many animals.
For one person a dog is a member of the family, for the other a source of nuisance. Dog poo is in the top-10 of Dutch annoyances. Dog poo on the streets is not only distasteful and unsanitary, it also pollutes the environment and poses a health to humans, as well as to other animals.
With the pilot-project 'Pet Carers' we want to examine if we can help people who can’t take care of their pet temporarily due to sickness or old age. As a result, many people are forced to bring their pet to an animal shelter which can cause unnecessary stress and suffering for the owner as well as the pet.
Approximately up to 10.000 wildlife animals (such as red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and wild boar) are killed annually in road traffic accidents in The Netherlands. And this number increases drastically every year. Sometimes the animals are killed instantly, but not always. A heavily wounded animal can still flee to seek safety, only to die later in a most horrible way.
In most animal shelters, many dogs wait far too long for a new owner. Dogs who are left on their own. Sometimes they are in the shelter because they were badly taken care of by their owner, because of which they developed negative behaviour. They may also have ended up in the shelter due to neglect and loneliness. With the Prison Dog project we want to help these dogs to a new start!
